With a castle and royal charter dating from the 13th century, Portel has lived off its agricultural and livestock farming for the past centuries. The present inhabitants ( who numbered just over 7000 in the last census ) have inherited a number of valuable monuments dating from former times and enjoy an enviable geographical situation.
Twenty kilometers away from center-town, we can reach the largest artificial dam in Europe, the Alqueva Dam, under construction and to be finished in the year 2001, that will have when full a water surface of 250 sq. Kilometers (155.25 sq.miles), where water-sports will be implemented. Therefore Deluxe Tourism will be developed in Portel's area.
